You may have heard me say (several times) that you can’t improve what you don’t measure. Too often we keep plugging away, posting each day, without really knowing for sure if we are on the right track. We just watch our numbers go up (followers, likes and comments per post, etc.), and think, “yep, we’re good!” But if we really want to grow our businesses and win over new fans that are our target customer, we need to make informed decisions about what we do on social media. For Instagram… enter: Iconosquare.
The free version of Iconosquare is amazing and full of useful and actionable information! However, whenever I tell people about Iconosquare… they go take a look… and come back to me overwhelmed! Today I am going to help you keep it simple. I show you the FIVE things in Iconosquare you should focus on, and then you can forget the rest. I’ve also created a handy Instagram Growth Tracking Sheet for you to download (see below), for free.
When you first log in, this is what you see:
You can actually see your feed (the people you follow), in real time. You can like and comment on photos, if you want to. As you move horizontally across the menu, you can see your own posts, a feed of photos you have liked, profile pictures of people who follow you, profile pictures of people you follow, and popular posts. This is a nice-to-have, but it isn’t where we are going to spend our time.
Back up in the main navigation menu, you want to go to “Statistics.”
Once you are on the Statistics tab, look on the left side of the page for the menu that includes: Overview, Rolling Month Analysis, Content, Engagement, Optimization, and Community (see left).
Rolling Month Analysis
Engagement shows you how many likes and comments you have gotten during the reporting time period (the last 30 days). While these numbers might give you a little ego boost, you should pay extra attention to the average/media. On average, how many likes and comments does each post get? Keep track of these numbers, because they should go up over time. Here you can also see what the 5 most liked and 5 most commented on posts were in the last 30 days. These are good indicators of the type of content your audience likes. Plan to do more of whatever that is!
Followers shows you how many new followers you’ve gotten in the last 30 days. Plan to look at these stats on the same day each month (I do the first day of the month), and write it down! Are you gaining momentum? I always hope to get more followers THIS month than I did LAST month. You can also see who your top 10 most engaged followers are. I love this! Make sure you are showing these folks some love… because they sure love you. Appreciating the fans you have is important to your success.
Back over in the navigation menu on the left, now click on Engagement. Here you can find your top five performing posts of ALL TIME (not just the last 30 days). Just another gut-check to see the types of things you should be posting more of.
Back over in the left menu, click on Optimization. I often get asked when the best time to post is… and I always give a lame answer like, “well, it depends.” Here is where you can answer that question for yourself, once and for all! The dark circles show what you actually DO. The light circles show when your people are liking and commenting on your content. The idea is to post when you see interaction is the highest. As you can see, it looks like I’m posting a little early. It would probably be best if I posted at 4 instead of 2. Saturdays at 8 look pretty good too. But your graph might look different!
Do not… I repeat, DO NOT, look at your lost followers. It will just psych you out! I’ve seen people in there that I felt like I was developing a relationship with, and it’s so hard to not take it personally! So just don’t look at it. It’s tempting, but I just squint as I scroll past those parts 🙂 It will just lead you to start psychoanalyzing everything you say and post and stress about if you offended someone or not. Just forget it! People unfollow for all sorts of reasons and trying to sort that out is probably fruitless!
